While observed climate changes and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly evident in the Mediterranean basin, seasonal forecasts assume a central role in decision-making chains and in managing climate related risks and selecting different adaptation options. For such a reason, Institute of Biometeorology of the National Research Council (CNR-IBIMET) has organized a training course on “Verification of Operational Seasonal Forecasts in the Mediterranean region”, in close collaboration with the World Meteorology Organization (WMO).

The course took place from 15th to 19th of September 2016 at the CNR Headquarters in Rome, and brought together the leading expert of Italian and international seasonal forecasters that held a series of lectures to the delegates of the Mediterranean National Weather Services. Through a review of the most advanced seasonal forecast verification methods, the course has contributed in supporting the Mediterranean Climate Outlook Forum (MedCOF) community activities.
The training course is part of the Education and Training Program that WMO, through the Regional Training Centres (RTC) (managed in Italy by CNR – IBIMET), which provides education and training for the provision of meteorological and climate services to WMO Member States.
